If you’re running modern guns in the real world, your safe has to do more than “lock.” It has to give you fast, controlled access while keeping kids, guests, and thieves out.

I’m Elijah Hunts, an American gamekeeper, and I’ve been using Vaultek gear for a while now in cabins, trucks, and a small suburban home. Their line is tech-heavy, but what matters to me is simple: does it protect the gun, and can I get to it when I actually need it?

We review products independently. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a commission to help support our testing.

Below are six Vaultek safes I’ve personally worked with and tested. Each one already has its own deep-dive review, but this page gives you the big picture: which model fits which job and what actually stood out in real use.

Vaultek RS800i – Smart 8-Rifle Safe for Serious Setups

If you want one main “home base” for rifles and pistols, the RS800i is the Vaultek that finally feels like a real gun cabinet, not just a large gadget box.

On paper, it stores up to 8 rifles plus handguns and mags in a modular interior built from perforated pegboard on the back wall and door. In practice, I was able to run a mix of ARs with optics, a pump shotgun, and a couple of scoped bolt guns by playing with the included barrel mounts and racks. The extra depth makes a difference; rifles with LPVOs and lights didn’t feel crammed or at risk of banging turrets on the door.

The entry options are where Vaultek shines. You get a big 360° biometric scanner, an 8-digit Smart Sense keypad, Nano Key, and the usual backup key setup, plus WiFi with ViSN for live alerts if someone starts messing with the safe or if temperature/humidity shifts. I’m not a fan of over-complicating security, but on this safe, the tech adds value: the app makes it easy to check that the door is actually locked when I leave the house, and the alerts give me peace of mind while traveling.

Build-wise, the RS800i is 14-gauge steel with 4 solid steel locking bolts and a solid feel when you slam the door. With it bolted into a corner wall and floor, it feels more like real security and less like a “deterrent box.” Interior LED lighting comes on automatically; I didn’t realize how much I’d appreciate that until I was grabbing a rifle in the dark and could actually see sling placement and mags without fumbling.

If you’re already running multiple long guns and want one primary safe that balances quick access with actual capacity, the RS800i is the one I recommend. It costs real money, but you’re paying for layout flexibility, solid steel, and smart features that genuinely help instead of just looking cool.

Best for: owners with 4–8 rifles, a couple of pistols, and a dedicated spot to bolt a full-size safe.

Vaultek DS2i Smart Station – Nightstand Safe That Actually Earns Its Space

Most “bedside” safes fight the lamp and alarm clock for space. The DS2i Smart Station solves that by doubling as the nightstand hub you were going to keep there anyway.

The top surface is a wireless charging pad rated up to 15W (non-MagSafe), plus you get USB and USB-C ports for extra devices. The front display shows time, temperature, and humidity, which sounds like a gimmick but is actually useful for tracking bedroom conditions if you store ammo or optics nearby.

Underneath, you have a sliding drawer safe that fits a full-size handgun up to about 9″ in overall length plus small valuables like jewelry or passports. The drawer opens automatically when you hit the biometric scanner or keypad. During testing, the motion-sensing backlit keypad and fingerprint reader were both quick and consistent once I saved multiple fingerprints at slightly different angles.

Construction is 18-gauge steel with an internal lockwork that feels stouter than the “gadget look” suggests. I mounted mine with the provided hardware so the whole unit can’t just be lifted and walked off with — something too many people forget with small safes.

Day to day, the DS2i worked well as my primary home-defense pistol safe. Phone charges on top, alarm clock visibility stays good, and the safe disappears visually into normal bedroom furniture. My main gripe is interior height; if you run tall optics or weapon lights on a big pistol, you need to be careful with positioning to keep things from scraping. You’re trading some interior space for that slim profile.

If you want a gun close at hand while you sleep, but also want the nightstand to look “normal,” the DS2i is one of the cleanest solutions I’ve used. It’s not a do-everything safe – it’s a purpose-built bedside station, and it does that job well.

Best for: single home-defense pistol plus wallet/phone/EDC storage on the nightstand.

Vaultek LifePod 10 – Travel Safe for Trucks, Backpacks, and Airline Runs

The LifePod 10 is the Vaultek I end up touching the most, simply because it lives in my truck, day pack, or carry-on, depending on the week.

A black LifePod with space for a spare magazine is open, revealing a handgun and accessories, with storage for cards and keys.
Vaultek LifePod comes with enough space for a spare magazine

It’s a T3 polymer case with a built-in lock, Smart Sense capacitive keypad, and anti-impact latch design that keeps the lid from popping under drops or rough handling. Size-wise, it works for compact and many mid-size pistols or as a general “valuables case” for passports, cash, watch, and a small camera.

The LifePod 10 is weather-resistant and TSA-compliant, so it’s perfectly at home in checked luggage or tossed in a boat compartment. I’ve had mine sliding around in a dusty truck bed and bouncing on ATV racks in drizzle; the seal and latch did their job. The keypad is simple and glove-friendly, and backup key access plus an external power port mean you’re not locked out if the 9V battery dies.

Interior-wise, you get crate foam and a lid organizer with an AirTag pocket, which is a small but smart touch, if someone steals the whole safe, at least you have tracking on the box. I trimmed the foam slightly to fit my preferred pistol profile and an extra mag, and it still holds everything snug.

The LifePod has limitations: it’s not meant to stop a determined thief with time and tools, and it’s still a small box. But for hotel rooms, vehicles, and everyday travel where you want “better than glovebox, better than nightstand drawer” security, it hits a very practical sweet spot.

I treat the LifePod 10 as my go-anywhere lockbox. It keeps a pistol or valuables controlled when I’m on the road and moves easily from truck to backpack to suitcase

Best for: travelers, truck guns, and anyone needing a compact, legal-friendly lockable case.

Vaultek MX Series – High-Capacity Handgun Safe for Closets and Offices

The MX Series is Vaultek’s answer for people who own a lot of handguns and want one central quick-access safe rather than scattering small boxes all over the house.

Inside, the MX can hold up to 8 handguns plus mags, passports, and other valuables depending on how you configure the racks and shelves. I loaded mine with a mix of full-size pistols, compacts, and revolvers and still had room for important documents and a little cash. For a home office or closet, it’s a very efficient footprint.

The top-mounted control panel is a highlight: a large 360° biometric scanner, an 8-digit Smart Sense keypad, and a small LCD status screen with a proximity sensor that wakes the panel as your hand approaches. In low light, that matters more than you’d think. I tested a series of stress entries, rushed swipes, slightly dirty fingers, off-angle presses, and the scanner stayed reliable once I’d stored several prints.

Build quality feels solid: heavy steel body, interior hinges, and pre-drilled mounting holes to anchor the safe to a shelf or floor. With it bolted into a closet corner, I’d be more worried about someone damaging the house structure trying to rip it out than actually getting it loose quickly.

With WiFi/Bluetooth models you can manage access logs, battery health, and status from the Vaultek app. That’s overkill for some people, but in a household with multiple responsible users, it’s useful to see when the safe was opened and by whom.

If your collection is pistol-heavy and you’re tired of juggling multiple small safes, the MX is the one to consider. It’s big enough to centralize most or all of your handguns without jumping up to a full rifle safe.

Best for: handgun collectors, people with multiple defensive pistols, or anyone wanting a “command center” safe in a closet or office.

Vaultek SE20 Slider – Fast Bedside / Vehicle Safe for One Ready Pistol

For pure speed with a single defensive handgun, the SE20 Slider is one of the best designs I’ve used.

The safe is a slim vertical box that holds a pistol up to about 8.875″ in overall length plus a spare mag, and it uses a 3-point precision rail system to drop the gun into a ready position when the door slides open. That means when you hit the keypad or key, the pistol is already presented grip-first instead of you digging around in a dark box.

Body construction is 16-gauge carbon steel with a durable finish and anti-pry design, which is plenty for a mounted, quick-access safe. The SE20 really comes alive when it’s mounted: under a desk, beside a bed frame, or in a vehicle. Bolted to the side of my nightstand, it let me drop a hand on the keypad from bed, punch the code, and have the pistol presented in a consistent position every time.

The backlit keypad is simple, fast, and gives you about 40,000 possible combinations; there’s also manual key backup. Battery life is decent (several months per charge in my use), and the micro-USB charging is straightforward.

In the real world, the advantage of the SE20 is that there’s almost no fishing around for the gun. Under stress, that matters. The downside is obvious: it’s a one-gun solution. If you want storage for jewelry, cash, or multiple pistols, this isn’t it. It’s a purpose-built defensive access tool.

If your priority is one handgun, instantly accessible, always in the same orientation, the SE20 Slider is hard to beat. Mounted properly, it’s one of the cleanest defensive setups you can have.

Best for: bedside or under-desk defensive pistol with a spare magazine; also very strong as a secured vehicle mount.

Vaultek Barikade Series 2 – Practical Everyday Pistol Safe on a Budget

The Barikade Series 2 is Vaultek’s “everyday value” line, less tech, more focus on simple, practical security for a single handgun and some essentials.

Vaultek Barikade Series 2 Size

Capacity-wise, it fits a full-size handgun up to about 10.75″ overall length, plus a built-in lid organizer that can hold passports, credit cards, and small documents. That makes it a solid option for people who want one box to hold both their carry pistol and the “wallet drawer” stuff they don’t want left loose.

The included 4-ft steel security cable attaches and detaches in seconds, so you can secure the safe to a bed frame, car seat mount, or closet shelf without a permanent install. In my tests, that cable made it easy to move between home and vehicle without losing the anchor point, a nice touch for renters or people who can’t start drilling holes in furniture.

You still get Vaultek’s attention to user experience: the keypad is straightforward, there’s manual key backup, and the interior layout is simple enough that you can find your gun by feel. You don’t get the WiFi/Bluetooth or biometric bells and whistles, but that’s sort of the point; fewer electronics to babysit, lower price tag.

Where the Barikade Series 2 really makes sense is for:

  • People who want better security than a basic lockbox, but don’t need app control
  • Secondary locations like cabins, offices, or vehicles
  • New gun owners who need a first safe that doesn’t eat the whole budget

I’ve used mine under a workbench and in the trunk of a small SUV, and it’s held up well to dust, vibration, and normal abuse.

If you like the Vaultek brand but don’t care about smart features, the Barikade Series 2 gives you their core build quality and usability at a friendlier price.

Best for: first-time safe buyers, secondary pistol storage, and budget-conscious owners who still want a trusted name.

Final Thoughts on Vaultek

As someone who spends a lot of time around guns and gear, I’m naturally skeptical of anything that looks too “gadget-y.” Vaultek walks that line: their safes are very tech-forward, but on these six models the technology generally serves the shooter instead of the other way around.

  • The RS800i is your main rifle safe.
  • The DS2i Smart Station owns the nightstand.
  • The LifePod 10 is your travel and truck companion.
  • The MX Series consolidates a handgun collection.
  • The SE20 Slider is about one pistol, fast.
  • The Barikade Series 2 covers everyday, budget-friendly pistol storage.

Pick the safe that matches how you actually live with your firearms, bolt it down, and stick to the basics: guns unloaded, good discipline, and locked storage when they’re not on your belt.
